Compound Event Nouns of the 'Modifier-head' Type in Mandarin Chinese

چکیده
Event nouns can lexically encode eventive information. Recently these nouns have generated considerable scholarly interest. However, little research has been conducted in their morphological and syntactic structure, qualia modification, event representing feature, and information inheritance characteristics. This study has these main findings. 1) Morphologically, the modifier and the head is either free or bound morpheme. Syntactically the modifier is a nominal, adjectival, verbal or numeral morpheme, while the head is a nominal morpheme. 2) The modifier acts as a qualia role of the head. 3) All heads represent events, while the modifier is or is not an event. 4) The semantic information of a compound event noun can be inherited from the modifier or the head.

متن کاملPredicting the Components of German Nominal Compounds
Word prediction systems (such as those embedded in most current augmentative and alternative communication systems) aim to predict what a user wants to type next on the basis of corpus-extracted n-gram counts. Good performance of such a system depends crucially on the size and quality of the underlying lexicon. Compounding is a common cross-linguistic mean to form complex words. In German as in...
متن کاملThe Other Pole of Degree Modification of Gradable Nouns by Size Adjectives: A Mandarin Chinese Perspective
Size adjectives can have degree readings when they modify gradable nouns. However, a cross-linguistic variation exists with respect to what type(s) of size adjectives in a particular language can have such readings. In English degree readings are available only for size adjectives that predicate bigness, and in Mandarin Chinese degree readings are available for all size adjectives irrespective ...
